In our nonprofit segment, a look at Make-A-Wish of Western NY.  Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.  Our guests are Tom Queri, the chair of the Rochester Advisory Board and Andrew Pluta of the New Leadership Council. Both are volunteers for the organization. Make-A-Wish WNY receives no government funding. It's largest fundraiser is the annual gala happening Saturday March 15 at Locust Hill Country Club in Rochester NY.

We highlight a different nonprofit in our community each week and through the month of February our spotlight is on Make a Wish of Western NY.Through your donations, Make A Wish fulfills the hopes and dreams of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Mary Jones says the oganization relies on contributions to help these children and receives no govenment funding. Dr. Andolina is a referral source for the agency and makes sure to refer children who are medically-eligible for having a wish granted. And while doctors and medicine heal bodies, Make-A-Wish can heal souls. The annual gala and largest fundraiser is March 15 at Locust Hill Country Club. Check out the website for tickets.

Make-A-Wish of Western New York is the February nonprofit on The CEO Hour.  Make A Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Make A Wish serves 17-counties from Buffalo to Jamestown, Rochester to Corning / Elmira, and all areas in between. It grants about 150 wishes per year at an average cost of $7,500 but the average wish cost is rising as air travel prices increase. Wishes typically fall into 1 of 4 categories, “I wish to go”, “I wish to be”, “I wish to have”, “I wish to meet” but there really is no limit to a child’s imagination in deciding their own heartfelt wish. It does not receive any state or federal funding. That's why Joel Harper and David Mammano let us know about the agencies largest fundraiser, the March 15, 2014 Annual Gala at Locust Hill Country Club. Safe Journey is our nonprofit of the month on The CEO Hour. This agency in the suburbs of Rochester NY helps end the terror of domestic abuse. Alli O'Malley and Jerry Elman explain how this counseling center works to break the cycles of violence that permeate our homes and society. Safe Journey counsels and protects women who are abused, and educates community groups and young people to eradicate domestic violence once and for all. It relies on donations from the public to survive and is having a fundraiser in March 2014.

Safe Journey is committed to helping victims move from surviving to thriving after an abusive relationship. This not for profit in the spotlight all December on The CEO Hour,is celebrating 15 years of service in the Rochester New York area. Joining us is director Alli O'Malley and board member Jerry Elman. It works to break the cycles of violence that permeate our homes and society. It counsels and protects women who are abused, and educates community groups and young people to eradicate domestic violence once and for all.

Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park is the only place of its kind remaining in the United States. Built in the late 1800's by Mary Clark and Frederick Ferris Thompson, the mansion has 40 rooms and nine out-buildings. Not to be found anywhere else.  She also had nine formal gardens designed after famous gardens from around the world. Executive Director David Hutchings and 200 volunteers care for these gardens. Although Sonnenberg is a state historic park, the state and federal governments do not provide any monetary support. It relies on admissions, donations and special events to pay the $2000 it costs to open the doors each day.

Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park receives no money from New York State. This 50 acre respite outside Rochester is ready for its finest days. A core of 200 volunteers care for the nine formal gardens and the 40 room mansion. But Sonnenberg relies on the public for support and the $2000 it takes to open the doors each day.
