As CEO of Pittney Bowes, Inc. Michael Critelli was an advocate for diversity and advancement of women in business.  Though he had never worked in movies, Critelli, a former Rochesterian and 1966 graduate of Bishop Kearney High School, was determined to bring the story of coach Catana Starks, the first woman ever to coach a men's collegiate team, to the big screen. High Falls Film Festival premiered "From the Rough" - based on the true story of Catana Starks, on April 25th at the Little Theatre.

The practice is maturing - and more crowded than ever before - especially now that the SEC is opening the doors and making it easier for small biz owners to raise capital online by engaging their networks. Not only are general interest funding websites cropping up every day like KickStarter or Indiegogo. More sites are starting to cater to niche interests and industries... and offering different methods of fundraising. These include donations, equity (due to JOBS Act), and rewards-based models. Donations- and rewards-based crowdfunding may be the most widely known, but did you know there are so many different types of crowdfunding for entrepreneurs to choose from? That's why it's important for people to choose the right one for the business type. There are eight social media crowdfunding models and  Josef Holm, founder of subscription-based platform TubeStart, joins us on the CEO Hour to give us examples of campaigns that would work for various funding models.

Bill Protzmann is the CEO of his own IT company and an accomplished pianist. While giving a concert seven years ago, the wife of a Vietnam Veteran was in the audience. She asked Bill to take his music program to veterans to help them.  Bill started Music Care, an entertainment program that uses music as treatment for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental, emotional and physical issues. Music Care is the use of specific music...music that you love...to produce a desired emotional, mental or physical result.  The National Council for Behavioral Health chose Bill as one of its Inspiring Hope Award Winners on May 6, 2014.

Ten years after Derek Sivers founded CD Baby, where independent artists sell their music online, Sivers started to lose the vision for his still young company.  He says Seth Godin told him, "remaining at the helm when you are no longer involved in the company's future, is doing a disservice to the business, your people and yourself."  So Sivers sold the company for $22 million dollars...money that went into a charitable trust for music education. Sivers said he made millions on his CD Baby before the sale and is now using that money to fund his new company, Wood Egg, a series of how to do business books in Asian countries from Singapore to China.  Sivers who lived in Singapore says the secret to being successful in Asian business is to put in the time needed to create trusted friend relationships with potential clients.  This transaction takes time and energy, His other tips for success, trust but verify and be aware of the difference between delegating and abdicating. Profitable business owners know what is going on in all departments.
